An Generosity of Strangers: The Way a Person I Only Just Encountered Helped Me Secure the Role That Changed My Life

In the closing decade of the 80s, I was beginning a backpacking trip to Europe with a friend. Since my travel mate was interested in enrolling in graduate studies in NYC, we had arranged a 14-day stopover there on the way to London.

We reached the postgrad residence, a large 10-storey building on the Manhattan's Upper West Side called International House. Setting down our luggage, we went directly to the dining hall, where we picked up meals, sat down, and began chatting with fellow residents.

Adjacent to my seat was an Iraqi man pursuing an engineering degree at Columbia University. He wanted to know what I did, and I shared that I had just graduated with a scientific background and had been conducting research using an electron microscope.

He mentioned that there was an research lab at the institution – right next door to the school of engineering, which was how he knew about it. He proposed that I ought to seek a role with them. I chuckled at the suggestion, explaining that I was soon departing to Europe and, even more importantly, I didn’t have a US visa.

A day later I ventured out, returning to the canteen that night. The man from Iraq approached me and told me that he had organized a discussion for me with the director of the microscopy lab at Columbia. Given that he had made the arrangement, I showed up for the discussion – but immediately informed my interviewer that I lacked the necessary visa, so I was likely not a suitable candidate.

As is common in NYC – a city where anything feels possible – she said: “We can make that happen. When can you start?” I never got on that flight to London.

I was employed there for three years. A perk of the job was that I got no-cost classes at Columbia, and I took advantage to complete a postgrad program in international relations.

We didn't cross paths after that and I am unaware of his name, but his incredible act of kindness changed my life in multiple respects. I didn't possess the confidence or self-belief to contact anyone at an Ivy League university and request employment. And, I had long dreamed to study abroad, but lacked the financial means without that tuition waiver.

What's more, that role at the university led me to a position in Switzerland where I got to know my wonderful partner, with whom I now have four wonderful sons and daughters. It was a total sliding doors moment. That kind stranger set me on a different course in life, and I’m forever grateful.
