Zak Crawley Claims Ignorance of Captain Stokes' Controversial 'Frail Characters' Comments

England opener Crawley suggested he had no knowledge of statements made by skipper Stokes about the team environment as no place for "those lacking fortitude".

Stokes made this message in several interviews following England's loss in the second Ashes series against the Australians previously.

In the lead-up to the Adelaide Test, where England now face a series loss at the earliest opportunity, the captain noted he had allowed his message to "drift around" within the squad.

"I've done all the talking over the past two days that I needed to have done," remarked the England leader.

But, following the opener made 85 on the penultimate day in the third Test, he commented: "I didn't see that."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. We take anything stated in the media with a pinch of salt," he added.

Frank Discussions and Consistent Messaging

The captain issued his "fragile individuals" observation after England were beaten in the second Test to fall 2-0 down.

The team subsequently took a holiday to a Queensland resort in the gap between the second and third Tests.

Prior to this match, Stokes said his players had held "honest" talks and he had urged them to "show a bit of dog" in their effort to remain in contention in the series.

Nevertheless, Crawley stated the guidance from Stokes and coach McCullum had stayed in line with their previous three years in leadership.

"It's been very positive, the same as always," said Crawley. "It's just trying to be optimistic, play our way, with great liberty. It felt like we were capable of an extraordinary feat entering this Test."

The Hosts On the Verge of Rapid Ashes Triumph

The opener's wicket late on Saturday was part of a crucial three-wicket burst by Australian off-spinner Lyon.

Lyon's triple strike in 20 deliveries – including the wickets of Harry Brook and Ben Stokes – meant England 207-6 chasing a daunting target of 435 runs.

This means, the home team need four wickets on the final day to secure an insurmountable 3-0 lead with three matches played.

Defeat would prolong the English team's winless run in this country to 18 consecutive matches and ensure a fourth successive overseas Ashes series loss.

This series will be completed in just 11 days of cricket – with England losing the initial matches in two and four days each.

The last time 1921, when Australia completed victory in England in eight days, has the outcome of the Ashes urn been decided more swiftly. Australia have also won in eleven days on two other occasions in the 21st century.

"It's disheartening," said Crawley. "Our goal was to regain the Ashes and now we are facing elimination now."

"There remains plenty to play for and we will certainly approach it like that," Crawley added.

"It's been difficult. Australia is a formidable team. It was always going to be tough coming here against them. They were the favourites coming in to it have demonstrated their quality."

Ollie Pope's Position In Question

Although Crawley's performance in the third Test probably answers questions about his short-term place in the side, Pope looks under immense pressure for his position in the fourth Test starting December 26th.

Pope fell for 17 runs in the team's second innings on day four, extending his modest returns versus the old enemy.

Across sixteen Ashes knocks, the Surrey man has failed to score a half-century and averages just 17.62.

A solitary other English batsman in over a century – Amiss – has played as many times in the top order in Ashes Tests and returned a lower average.

But, the opener insisted any suggestion his teammate is under the microscope originates with "the media" – referring to the journalists – "and not within the team."

"We all know how good of a player he is," added he. "He has had a productive year to be frank."

"He has produced some really good knocks. This is noise externally. There's no chat of that nature regarding Pope amongst the players," he finished.
